The Bible Recap Day 37

The Bible Recap Day 37 Exodus 22-24 God Shot - Remember your freedom to Love comes from God It is sections like this that make it hard for me to stay consistent with reading the Bible every day. As a matter of fact, it has been 2 weeks since I have done my daily devotional because I got bored with the minute details. Does this ever happen to you? Most of the passages here are laws and means of arbitration between the Israelites. The application has always been hard for me and even as I listened to this AGAIN I found my mind wandering. I mean, I have never had to worry about being paid compensation if my ox got hurt when I loaned him to my neighbor. So, I would like to make a point to anyone reading this, and even more importantly to myself, it is ok to use a devotional guide like the Bible Recap and see what they gleaned out of it because it might have meant something to them and that may reach you where you are.  I remember going through the book of Romans with a gro...

The Bible Recap Day 35

The Bible Recap Day 35 Exodus 16-18 God Shot: Stop Trying To Do This Alone Somehow this specific day of The Bible Recap has been on repeat in my car so I have listened to these passages more than I have the others. And EVERY-TIME the same theme sticks out to me. “Protein and carbs. God gave it to the Israelites so it must be good for us.”  No, what actually stuck out to me every time I heard these passages was Moses thought he had to work alone. I get this from Ex 18:13-18 where Moses and Jethro were having a conversation about Moses being the judge for the people. In verse 18 Jethro speaks to the heart of the matter; “You and the people with you will certainly wear yourselves out, for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to do it alone.” In essence, Jethro the consummate father-in-law, told Moses that he was an idiot for what he was doing. VS 19 “Now obey my voice; I will give you advice, and God will be with you.” But he was right, not matter how good Mos...

The Bible Recap Day 34

The Bible Recap Day 34 Exodus 13-15 God Shot: Delivered Through not From In 2013 a minister was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and given less than 90 days to live. The following Sunday, he got up to preach his last sermon ever. I was in the congregation and he said that he had always wondered that if he knew that a sermon was going to be his last what would he preach on. Then he had us turn to Exodus 14 and read the story of the parting of the Red Sea. I thought “What a weird passage to use as your last sermon ever”. But his focus was not necessarily on the parting of the Red Sea, it was on verse 22, And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.” There was a phrase he focused on in there “into the midst of the sea”. He said, and I am paraphrasing, “God could have done many things to get them over the water, he could have given them wings to fly over, but he chose to take them throu...

The Bible Recap Day 33

The Bible Recap Day 33 Exodus 10-12 God Shot: Light in the Darkness Exodus 10:22-23 [22] So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was pitch darkness in all the land of Egypt three days. [23] They did not see one another, nor did anyone rise from his place for three days, but all the people of Israel had light where they lived. When I think plagues I think staff into snakes, frogs, locust, gnats, and the death of the first born. When I was in Iraq in 2005 we were told that there were going to be several weeks where grasshoppers were going to be like a plague. I thought they were kidding... they were not. We would literally fill a 13gal trashcan with dead grasshoppers everyday from our office. When you walked, they would flow just like waves on a river avoiding your steps. It was really weird but I certainly solidified a better understanding of what some of these plagues may have been like. Today however, I got captured by the plague of darkness. To my knowledge I...

The Bible Recap Day 32

The Bible Recap Day 32 Exodus 7-9 God Shot: He Knows The Omniscience of God. I found this simplistic definition; “For God to be omniscient means that God knows everything. God knows all things, including future events and all contingencies (possibilities). He knows what will happen and what would have happened, had people made different choices. He knows the consequences of all possible choices or events.” When I read in scripture that “God hardened Pharaohs heart” I hear that he knew that Pharaohs heart was not going to change. God knew that Pharaoh was going to give problems to Moses as he tried to free his people. It should not be a shock. We know all that Pharaoh was using the Israelites as slave labor and he did not want to lose his labor force. God was not shocked by this and I am so glad that he warned Moses about it. God continued to tell him, “hey man, Pharaoh is going to say one thing and then he is going to change his mind. It is going to cause some major problem...

The Bible Recap Day 31

The Bible Recap Day 31 Exodus 4-6 God Shot: Just a little Patience For most of my life I have been told, I have believed, and I have repeated that the nature of God in the Old Testament seems different than the God of the New Testament. It just seems like the God of the Old Testament seems a lot more wrathful. I have to be honest, this morning as the scriptures were being read I had more questions than I did God Shots. My biggest one is, “Did God appear more visibly or more audibly to people in the Old Testament than he does today”? I mean, if that is true I can understand why he is more wrathful in the OT. When my dad came up to me, looked me in the eye,  and told me to do something I had better do it. If I didn’t there was going to be a wrathful father. But after I grew up we did not see each other that much and he “hoped” I would do the right thing. When I didn’t, he was more disappointed than wrathful. Is that the same between the OT God and the NT God? My God shot...

The Bible Recap Day 30

The Bible Recap Day 30 Exodus 1-3 God Shot: Fear Not There are so many different directions to go in my God shot today. The first one that comes to mind is “never trust Hollywood to teach you the Bible” because I did not hear anything about Charleston Heston and Yule Brenner being friends here. All joking aside, there are a lot of things that Hollywood takes license on so always read the Bible before changing your theology after a movie (Noah was so bad). Second directions I could go is “In His Time”. God took almost 400 years to fulfill a prophecy. I get frustrated when I don’t get an answer to a prayer in the first day. I get mad when I have not heard anything in a week. And I get downright discouraged when it is anything longer than 8 days. Another is, “Don’t allow yourself to believe that you are irreplaceable” Think about it, Joseph was in command of so much stuff when he was alive. But just two generations after he dies the Pharoah does not remember to treat hi...
