Exodus 16-18
God Shot: Stop Trying To Do This Alone
Somehow this specific day of The Bible Recap has been on repeat in my car so I have listened to these passages more than I have the others. And EVERY-TIME the same theme sticks out to me. “Protein and carbs. God gave it to the Israelites so it must be good for us.”
No, what actually stuck out to me every time I heard these passages was Moses thought he had to work alone. I get this from Ex 18:13-18 where Moses and Jethro were having a conversation about Moses being the judge for the people. In verse 18 Jethro speaks to the heart of the matter; “You and the people with you will certainly wear yourselves out, for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to do it alone.” In essence, Jethro the consummate father-in-law, told Moses that he was an idiot for what he was doing. VS 19 “Now obey my voice; I will give you advice, and God will be with you.” But he was right, not matter how good Moses was he was not able to do this alone. But this is not the only place where we see that working alone does not work.
In Chapter 17. The Israelites were going to war with Amalek and as long as Moses held his arms up the Israelites would be successful in battle. The moment he put them down they would start losing the battle. So Aaron and Hur sat Moses down and held his arms up when he got too tired.
In 2024 I got together with my friend Garrett and we agreed that we are the most alone we have ever been in our lives. There just aren’t that many people that we are close to physically that are there for us emotionally. So we started a men’s group. His is meeting in Marietta, GA and ours is meeting in Dothan, AL. As I was looking for people to invite to come and meet up I kept hearing the same message over and over... I feel alone. Every man that we talked to had the same story. And while it may make us sound weird for saying it there is truth to the fact that we were not created to be alone. We were not made to be able to work alone. When we had our meeting last night this was one of the points that I brought up; “If Moses could not do it alone, what makes us think we can.”
My God Shot? God sent someone to speak into Moses ear to tell him that he could not do everything by himself. That spoke to me and reminded me that I have to stop thinking that I can do it all by myself. God wants me to keep looking for men that I can do life with that will provide me the support that I need.
